The sun is shining and that’s good for your health!

The snow has melted, the days are longer, and the sun is shining. Winter is officially behind us and the thoughts of going for a walk, heading to the beach, and spending time outside are here. Being able to spend time outside has many positive effects beyond being able to have fun. Being outside and getting sunshine gives the body much needed vitamin D. This promotes relaxation mentally, and physically as it soothes muscles and body tissues. Warmth and sunshine has a soothing effect for aches, pains and muscle stiffness. Moderate exposure to natural sunlight has a positive psychological and physical effect on our health.

Studies have shown that being in the sun propels us to be more active. This makes sense, as generally when people are outside they are being active. Even laying on the beach with a margarita is usually accompanied by some swimming or playing in the sand. This must be what they’re talking about when they say “exercise can be fun.” A recent medical article stated that avoiding sun exposure is as dangerous as smoking, explaining that ”nonsmokers who stayed out of the sun had a life expectancy similar to smokers who soaked up the most rays, according to researchers who studied nearly 30,000 Swedish women over 20 years.” Studies have shown that being exposed to the summer sun for only 30 minutes corresponds to a vitamin D intake of 250 μg, which is "way above" the recommended daily intake of 10 μg per day. However, moderation is key. Overexposure to UV rays can be extremely dangerous and cause long term health issues.

So enjoy yourself, and embrace the next few months of sunshine. Kick the ball around, finish that project you’ve been putting off, and get dirty while you’re doing it! Just remember to apply that sunblock before you go outside, reapply throughout the day, and don’t forget to get behind your ears.
